Dear Today's Dreamers

Book: The Lesbiana's Guide To Catholic School

SPOILER ALERT

Plot: 8/10

Okay so the plot of this story is a mexican lesbian named Yamilette (also known as Yami) who moved to Slaton Catholic School with her brother Caeser, because he was being bullied almost constantly and being jumped at school. She meets a pretty girl named Bo in her first ever class, when Bo does a Life vs Choice presentation, and gets told off by her teacher. Throughout the book she gets to know Bo, and her friends David, and Amber. Caeser is doing well, and makes friends with a boy named Hunter, who has a crush on Yamilette. Soon after that she discovers Caeser is also queer (bisexual), and becomes his boyfriends’ beard. Her father, who was deported to Mexico is a strong support system for Yami, until the end of the first half or so when she drunkenly comes out to him at a party, and he ghosts her. Near the end of the book, she discovers Caeser is sucidal after he is hospitalised. She takes this chance to come out to her mother as a way to protect her brother from her mothers scrutiny. They all become closer as a family from this experience.

My Age Rating: 12+

This story deals with suicidal themes, racisim, homophobia, and bullying. There is also some drinking at a party, and “sexual themes”, but the characters don’t do more than kiss. There is some language, such as f#ck, sh#t , and assh#le, but I wouldn’t discribe the language as strong. The only strong language is a homophobic slur in Spanish directed at Caeser, and a few more swear words in Spanish, directed at the homophobic father.

But actually, it is an amazing story line. Yami goes through an extreme amount of character development, and it makes her a strong character role model. Amber is a strong ally, as is David. Bo is amazing, and a great role model. She is unapologetic and is constantly herself. I hope you read this book, I love it!
