Book
Plot: 9/10
Okay so the premise of this book, is this teenage girl named Vivian starts a club named Moxie to respond to the sexual harrassment at her school. I think the book is slightly better than the movie remake because it shows higher connection between the character and her best friend, as apposed to her boyfriend Seth. Personally I think Seth in the movie defeats the message that women don’t need men, and have power of their own, but they are very sweet, and stop the movie from being too dark. So the book is better in my opinion, but I think the movie is also really good.
My Age Rating: PG 13
I chose this rating because there are alot of sexual refrences in this book, to deminstrate the harrassment, it contains one semi-graphic discription of a sexual assult of one of the characters, and one of the characters describes the fact she was almost raped at a party by the antagonist, but she doesn’t go into more detail than: “The Antagonist tried to assult me at a party, and no one listened to me” Don’t let this deter you, this book is amazing, and is very moving. I cried reading it the first time. They also discribe one girl as “Most Fuckable” but the book adresses how messed up that kind of language is. Otherwise, the language isn’t too bad.
Movie
Plot: 8/10 The premise of the movie is the same as the book, except it doesn’t have as much of the postive fundraising of the book, replaced by Kiera (one of the Moxie Memebers, a soccar/football player) running against the antagonist Mitchell for a sporting schollarship. But also that means it doens’t include the homophobia from Mitchell. The movie is a bit more racially diverse, and contains three LGBTQIA characters, as well as one disabled character.
My Age Rating: PG 13 Well, there is a barely more graphic discription of a character that is actually raped, and they rank girls on apearance at the start of the movie. It’s like senior class superlatives, but a bit different.
In conclusion, there is a lot of sexual refrencing in both the book and movie, and semi-graphic discriptions of assult of harrasment, mainly in the book. You will have to make that choice for yourself, or your kid, if that’s going to be something that’s difficult for you to deal with, or read.
