Dear Today's Dreamers

Life VS Choice, Are Abortions Ethical?

Okay so this is probably one of the most controversial topics I will debate, Life or Choice is the question of abortion rights.

I’d like to say this is my opinion, and you are entitled to your own opinion. But if someone was to hold me at gunpoint and make me choose between Life and Choice, and say if I chose Choice, I’d have to die, then I would still pick Choice. Abortion rights are controversial because it varies so much from country to country, and a lot of religious organisations object to abortions.

The argument of Life is that living with a child in a situation where you possibly don’t have the framework to support it, or you may be too young to care for a child safely, is the lesser evil than killing the child before it can be born. Now I can understand why people think the child should be given a chance to live but here’s the thing… If you were to let that child live in an unsafe or unstable environment, this could cause it to have many mental health challenges or if the parent can’t care for it properly, then the lack of abortion may just delay the death by a couple of years. I believe that it is better if the parent can’t care for the child it is kinder to not have a child. Simple as that.

But what about adoption? I hear you cry. Well even though it’s true you could give away your child, if the mother in question is very young, then she could die during childbirth. In any case, giving away your child is a traumatic experience for many parents.

There is also something to be said for victims of rape. Why shouldn’t they be allowed to have the choice to go through with this life changing event, when they were denied the choice to set the event in motion? Should they have to have a child and raise it by themselves, if they are too young or not in a safe position to care for the child properly?

The worst thing about countries banning abortion, or restricting abortion rights, is it usually doesn’t prevent abortions from taking place. It just means people will go through unethical or unsafe abortion practices that could harm their long term health, and may not even work. So when politicians are choosing life over choice, then they aren’t choosing life at all.

I hope this post was informing, and may influence you to vote for choice over life to protect the right to have a safe abortion.
