Euthanasia is the practice of ending the life of a patient to limit the patient’s suffering. The patient in question would typically be terminally ill or experiencing great pain and suffering. The word “euthanasia” itself comes from the Greek words “eu” (good) and “thanatos” (death). - University of Missouri
As you can see from the above, it is another episode of Life VS Choice! Welcome back searchers of controversy! This is a bit different than an abortion, because assisted suicide is people of any age, but is mainly targeted at the elderly. If I had to choose, my answer would be the same as the abortion rights argument, I think Choice is much more important.
Reason One, many of the people who are choosing assisted suicide, will never get better, and will only live the rest of their lives in pain. They will never recover, they will only extend their lives by months, and it’s not even a long time they will extend their lives in most cases.
Reason Two, if that patient will be in pain for the rest of their life, and their death will be painful, it’s a lot kinder on them and their family to take assisted suicide. If the family knows for sure, the patient can have their last words, and get their affairs in order before they die.
Reason Three, they can regain the sense of control over the direction of their life, one last time. They will be able to tell their family and friends how long they have, and they can finally be able to plan ahead. It can give the patient a sense of direction they may have lost with a diagnosis of something like cancer, or any other deadly disease.
So that’s why I believe in choice. It is the kinder option. It is kinder to end suffering than extend it. It is the ethical and human thing to do, if the patient chooses it.
