Dear Today's Dreamers

Help! I can't study!

This request for advice came to me at a time where I was thinking pretty much the exact same thing, what are some top studying tips? Anway, this is the request that came to me from someone named Sam!

Audrey

I’m starting highschool as a year nine in a couple days, and I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to study, and I can’t stop thinking about how this is the only school that matters. Can’t I just go back to primary school? It shouldn’t be this stressful, should it? Can you give me some tips for studying, please? My school told us they’d give us an hour of homework per day! It’s urgent!

From Sam

Dear Sam

First thing I’ll say is DON’T PANIC! Studying isn’t going to be a problem for the first week at least, so you can take a breather. I started the habit of taking notes in class during year eight, and was breifly apart of a study group with two of the best mathmaticians in my class, and one person who was just as confused as me, so I have a few past experiences to give you some tips. Here are some do’s and don’ts.

DO:

  1. Try get at least one coloured pen or highlighter per subject, and a small notebook, so you can easily check over your notes from any class

  2. Study with friends! When planning a study session, bring a friend or two with slightly different skill sets at different subjects so you can help eachother out

  3. Have at least 8 hours of sleep every night so you can focus propperly during the day.

  4. If you must have your notes on a laptop, take the notes when you are in class on paper because it has been proven to be better for memory and recall

  5. If you’ve been studying for over fifteen minutes, and you can’t concentrate, don’t continue studying, go on a walk around your block, touch grass, drink some water, have a sweet snack, anything that gets your brain working!

  6. Make some flash cards! They can help with quick recall, so always bring them to your study sessions!

  7. Make a study playlist! Do you focus/study better with Lofi Girl, or motivational music? That’s something you may need to learn before you have to put it to the test before a test

DON’T:

  1. Sugar can be a great quick fix for people needing more energy or motivation, but it doesn’t always help and can make focus worse for some poeple, especially people with ADHD, so you can make that choice for yourself

  2. Don’t neglect fun times with your family or friends because of studying. Studying is improtant, but not at the expense of your happiness

  3. Never study with people who will distract you, so studying with your bestie isn’t always the best idea

So Sam, I hope these tips were usefull to you, and to anyone else who randomly saw the header “I can’t study” and wanted some tips and tricks!
